    Plant Care

    Light & Temperature

    • Light: Plant in a location that receives full sun to partial shade. Thujas thrive best with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
    • Temperature: Thujas are hardy and can tolerate a wide range of temperatures. They perform well in USDA hardiness zones 5-9. Protect young plants from extreme cold and harsh winds by using burlap or windbreaks in winter.

By ensuring adequate sunlight and protecting against extreme temperatures, your Thuja plants will grow healthy and strong.

    Watering

    • First Year: Water deeply 2-3 times a week to establish roots.
    • Established Plants: Water once a week, adjusting for weather.
    • Deep Watering: Soak soil to 6-8 inches to encourage deep roots.
    • Morning Watering: Water early to reduce evaporation and disease risk.
    • Soil Check: Keep soil moist but not waterlogged; water when the top 1-2 inches are dry.
    • Mulch: Use a 2-3 inch mulch layer to retain moisture, keeping it away from the trunk.
    • Avoid Overwatering: Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.

    Fertilizing

    • Vermi Compost: Rich in essential nutrients, compost improves soil structure and fertility.
    • Well-Rotted Manure: Provides a balanced mix of nutrients and organic matter.
    • Bone Meal: High in phosphorus, promotes strong root development.
    • Fish Emulsion: Liquid fertilizer that provides a quick nutrient boost.
    • Seaweed Extract: Contains trace minerals and promotes overall plant health.

Timing: Apply organic fertilizers in early spring, just before the new growth begins. For continuous support, you can reapply mid-summer if needed.

    • Quantity:- Compost/Manure: Apply 2-3 inches deep layer around the plant.
    • Bone Meal: About 1 tablespoon per foot of plant height.
    • Fish Emulsion/Seaweed Extract: Follow package instructions for dilution and application rates.

Watering After Application: Water thoroughly after applying organic fertilizers to help nutrients penetrate the soil and reach the roots.

    • Frequency: One application in early spring is usually sufficient, but if the plant appears to need additional nutrients, reapply mid-summer. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can cause nutrient imbalances.

    General Tips

    • Sunlight: Plant your Thuja in a location that receives full sun to partial shade. They thrive best with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
    • Soil: Ensure well-drained soil that is slightly acidic to neutral. Thujas are adaptable but prefer moist, fertile ground.
    • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the first few years. Water deeply once a week, increasing frequency during hot, dry periods.
    • Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds.
    • Fertilizing: Feed your Thuja with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can harm the plant.
    • Pruning: Trim lightly in late spring or early summer to maintain shape and remove any dead or diseased branches. Avoid heavy pruning, as Thujas do not recover well from extensive cutting.
    • Pest Control: Inspect regularly for common pests like bagworms and spider mites. Treat infestations promptly with appropriate insecticides or natural remedies.
    • Winter Care: Protect young plants from harsh winter winds and heavy snow by wrapping them in burlap or using windbreaks.

By following these simple care tips, your Thuja plants will thrive, adding enduring beauty and elegance to your garden.
