Belonging to family Strelitziaceae, Birds of Paradise are evergreen, tropical plants, native to the tropical forests of South Africa. The name of the plant comes due to its resemblance of the flowers to the birds-of-paradise. The plants are often confused with banana plants since they are similar in appearance. These regal plants are named for the vibrant, orange crane-like flowers that they produce, like Birds of Paradise. They are also called Crane flowers in South Africa. They are excellent houseplants and thrives beautifully if used as a statement ornamental piece in decorating the interiors.

About Birds of Paradise Plant:

  1. The plants are tropical and have unique and beautiful, orange crane like flowers.
  2. The split leaves gives the Bird of Paradise plant distinct bird-like appearance is believed to be purposeful leaf tearing and the leaf’s ability to reduce wind drag.  The splits in the leaves are an evolutionary adaptation of the plant that allow wind to pass through the leaves
  3. Keep trimming the older leaves on the Bird of Paradise plant, as the older leaves and flowers start drooping. The new leaves always emerge from the center and keep the plant full and balanced.
  4. In a potted condition, the plant grows almost 3” to 8” tall.
  5. Do not keep the plant near any air vents or drafts since it might lead to leaf drying and ultimately, leaf browning.
  6. It is one of the most favorite flowering houseplants and makes an excellent statement piece.

Here are some care tips for Birds of Paradise Plant:-

Light and Temperature Tips for Birds of Paradise Plant:

  1. The plant thrives best in direct, medium intensity sunlight. The split leaves allow natural light to penetrate to the lower parts of the plant.
  2. Temperatures should range between 18°C-30°C and should not be lowered below 15°C.
  3. The plant likes a humid atmosphere, so make sure to use a humidifier or mist the plants regularly.

Water Tips for Birds of Paradise Plant:

  1. The plants like a moist soil but not soggy and water-clogged soil.
  2. The soil can be allowed to dry about 2”-3” between watering, so that the water doesn’t get clogged around the roots.
  3. Under-watering leads to droopy leaves and over-watering leaves to browning of leaves.
  4. During winters, the plants go through a resting period and needs less water.
  5. The plant develops root rot on over-watering.

Fertilization tips for Birds of Paradise Plant:

  1. Use a well-draining potting mix for the plant.
  2. The soil should be a well-draining soil, or the plant develops root rot.
  3. Fertilizers can be used during the growing seasons.

  1. Rotate your plant at a regular interval with the light direction every few days to ensure even growth on all sides and clean the leaves so the plant can photosynthesize efficiently through the leaf surface. When cleaning the leaves, check the bottom part or the undersides of the leaf and keep an eye out for pests.
