For an amateur houseplant parent, this plant is an excellent choice. Spider Plant, belonging to family Asparagaceae, are some of the the easiest air-purifying plant you can grow if you are the forgetful type. The major pollutants it removes are Benzene, Toluene, Pentane, Xylene and Formaldehyde, some of which are major contributors in the printing and rubbing industries. Apart from that, these compact houseplants do not require a lot of attention and can be used in decorating workspace and corner tables at home.

  1. Spider plants produce a rosette of long, thin, arched foliage that is solid green or variegated with white.
  2. During the summer, spider plants may produce tiny white flowers on long stems, as well as baby spider plants (offsets) called “pups.” The pups look like tiny spiders, hence the plant’s name!
  3. Spider plants were once highlighted by NASA for their reported air-purifying ability
  4. Grow in a soil-based, well-draining potting mix. Spider plants like even moisture; they don’t like to be too dry or too wet.
  5. Keep plants in bright to moderate indirect Spider plants do not appreciate direct, hot sunlight, which can burn their leaves, causing brown tips and spots.
  6. Spider plants grow fairly quickly and can easily become pot bound. Plan to repot a spider plant about every other year.
  7. Spider plants can be grown outdoors as annuals during the summer. They look especially good along the edge of a container or bed, as long as they are kept out of direct sunlight.

How to care for Spider Plants ?

Being one of the most resilient plants around, it does not require too much attention.

Light & Temperature Tips for Spider Plant

  1. Keep plants in bright to moderate indirect Spider plants do not appreciate direct, hot sunlight, which can burn their leaves, causing brown tips and spots.
  2. The plant loves bright or indirect sunlight with a cooler temperature of around 20 to 27℃.
  3. They benefit from occasional pruning, cutting them back to the base.
  4. Maintain average room temperature and humidity.

Water Tips for Healthy Growth of Spider Plant

  1. During initial growth, water occasionally; once fully developed (within one year), water moderately.
  2. The plant should be watered well but should not be over watered so as the soil to turn soggy.
  3. Soggy soil will eventually lead to root rot.
  4. The plant prefers to be dried out a bit between watering.
  5. In the spring and summer months, keep the soil moist to encourage growth. Do not let soil dry out too much.

Soil Tips for Spider Plant, Chlorophytum Comosum

  1. Provide them with a well draining soil.
  2. Since spider plants prefer a semi-pot bound environment, re-pot them only when their large, fleshy roots are highly visible and watering gets difficult.
  3. Fertilize up to twice a month in the spring and summer, however, avoid over fertilization.

If you begin to notice spider plant leaves browning, there’s no need to worry. Browning of leaf tips is quite normal and is not harmful to the plant. This is often the result of fluoride found in water, which causes salt to build-up in the soil. It usually helps to periodically leach plants by giving them a thorough watering to flush out the excess salts. Be sure to allow the water to drain out and repeat as and when needed. It may also help to use distilled water or even rainwater on plants instead of that from the kitchen tap or outside spigot.
